I hope you’ve had a good and peaceful week. One of the best ways in which to stay calm and focused, especially during this challenging time, is to do meditation or yoga. Meditation doesn’t have to take very long, in fact if you look on you tube you will find a number of them that only take 5 or 10 minutes. Also, throughout the day, make sure you are focusing on your breathing, 3 deep breaths in through your nose, hold for the count of 3 and then exhale slowly for the count of three.
OK, so let’s carry on from last week and take a look at what makes up your mind and how it works.
You may already know that your mind works on two levels, the conscious and subconscious. Your conscious mind which represents only about 10% of the brain, retains and remembers the events and feelings of approximately the past one and a half hours.
However, your subconscious is divided into three areas, which in total represent 90% of your brain power.
- The critical area of your subconscious contains memories of approximately
the past 24 hours. - The modern memory area which is part conscious and part subconscious holds
memory from conception to present day. - The primitive area of the subconscious includes all the primitive memory that lies dormant. It includes genetic heritage as well as evolved learning and conditioning. Anything that affects this area often results in a rapid reaction, (acting on impulse) without thinking as well as the fight and flight response.
However intelligent you may be, however logical you may think you are, as you can see from the descriptions above, your subconscious is bigger and way more powerful than your conscious mind. This 90% has no filter system and has been taking in every message of any kind all your life. This is where your belief system is created and it also basically runs your every-day thinking! This is why it’s so important to work on being consciously aware.
There’s much more to your mind than you think and in this podcast episode I go into much more detail which will allow you to conquer fear and decrease stress.
